ALL WORK NO MORE PRACTICE!

So today was our last official practice!  From now on they just throw us in the shows, hopefully on the back row. We however got to go see “Sunset By The Mississippi,” for their dress rehearsal.  There are still a few kinks to work out but over all it is very cute.  These are the young kids from the universities and us old folk!

Some video, but the sound isn’t that good.  We will have to re-record again:

Your dad in his new working clothes with his new ride!!!
So today I started working in the Scovill Bakery.  I worked with a woman that was rather hard for me to relate to and that means that my six hour shift can be rather longggggg.  But I go back to Brigham Young tomorrow.

These are the bustle ovens.  Named because they stick out behind the house like a woman’s bustle and keep the houses from heating up so hot.  They soak the wooden doors in water and that way they don’t burn but allow your goodies to bake.  This is a butter churn and a paddle to retrieve your baked goodies.

This is a butter mold.  Notice the cow motif!!

Bread slicer, with a very sharp blade I might add.

This is a six cup measuring spoon for flour and a sugar auger.  Sugar came in huge chunks and they used the auger to help granulate it.

Fireplace where most of the cooking was done.

Cookie cutters made in the Nauvoo Tin Shop.

Spices sold by the weight.

Guess what each one of these things are used for?  A quiz at the end of the tour.

Lucious Scovill was sent to England on a mission and he had taken a drawing of the temple.  He had 1800 of these plates made. They have the names of the twelve apostles at that time on them.  Only 12 of them have been found, one happens to be in the bakery. Don’t touch!!!! If you run across something like this in a garage sale…..GRAB IT!
Well, I am exhausted once again.  We don’t get home until after 8 PM and next week I guess there will be six shows a week that we are expected to be in.  I should loose weight but who wants to take bets on that?

  1. Well there is a rolling pin a doughnut cutter outer, a stick you get the doughnuts out of the hot grease with, spice grinders, a dough cutter, some cinnamon sticks, and a very wicked looking thing that was probably used in some sort of circumcision thing. Do I get the prize??????

Looks like fun send some cookies for Christmas either this year or the next.

  2. Wow. They have sure upped the entertainment factor at Nauvoo. I'm amazed though that they have enough people coming through ton warrant a show EVERY night. Do they continue nightly performances in the Winter? Man, I hope not.

My kids loved the pictures of the bakery. I imagine they are all very grateful for microwaves right about now.

    Love you!
